Our Latest Ambition: Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, Argentina
Chuck Tue, 2013-08-27 21:09
Amidst the preparation you have to think about the reward. Eyes on the prize, right? We spend a lot of time thinking and talking and dreaming about Europe and the Caribbean, but slowly creeping up our must-see-soon list is Buenos Aires, Argentina. We actually considered going a few years ago, back in 2009 or so, when the Euro was still crazy expensive. All the research indicates it's a beautiful city, and just felt a little on the exotic side: a little off the beaten path for most Americans. The economy settled down, the dollar bounced back against the Euro, and as anyone who reads our blog (...

California Wine Country, 2013

Chuck Sat, 2013-08-10 10:00
Sometimes when you do something you ask yourself, "Now, why didn't I do that earlier?" This was the case with our summer trip to California wine country, which, followers of our blog will know, has been on the wish list for a little while. Lori and I flew out to San Francisco on a Thursday so I could meet with some colleagues Friday morning, and Susan (Lori's sister) and Randy (Susan's husband) joined us Friday afternoon. We enjoyed Pier 39, the Fisherman's Wharf area, and took a bay cruise between Friday evening and Saturday, then our best friends, Ty and Laurie, drove down from Seattle and...

Travel Wishlist, Part 6 - Abroad, Other than Europe

Chuck Tue, 2013-08-06 21:30
Well this will wrap up my re-posting of my previous wishlist; time to write some new stuff! Wow, time can get away from you. Has it really been more than 3 months since my last blog?? Well, another Christmas has come and gone, and we had the best ski trip ever in early February, so my excuse is "I've been busy". We went to Killington, Vermont, if you're curious, and it was the week of "Winter Storm Nemo" (since when did they start naming blizzards and nor'easters, and why random animated character names?). It was bluebird skiing 2 days and snowing hard the third, my son proposed to his...

Travel Wishlist, Part 5 - Europe

Chuck Mon, 2013-08-05 03:00
Sadly we've not been able to chip away any at the Europe section of the wishlist, but then again we just took a major trip to Europe just last summer AND we're planning to spend much of next year there. But looking over the list, I'd only make one change: I'd add Slovenia. We are certifiable Europhiles. We've vacationed in Europe five times now and have loved every visit. We'd go back every year if that were possible, and among our pipe dreams are spending a year in Paris, London, or both. On our first trip in 2001 we visited Amsterdam and Paris and so loved both cities we decreed that on...

Travel Wishlist, Part 4 - Ski Trips in North America

Chuck Sun, 2013-08-04 19:00
Readers who know me (Chuck) might know also that last year I lost 80 pounds. So when we took our ski trip this past winter, it was unsurprisingly the absolute best ever. We did 3 days at Killington, Vermont and I ski'd solid from first turns of the lift to last one off the mountain. I've never been able to do that, and it was motivation enough to keep the weight off and stay in shape! Next year we have our sites set on Colorado, so that's a bit of a departure from my original blog... Having grown up in South Mississippi (where if you go any further south you are in the Gulf of Mexico), we are...

Travel Wishlist, Part 3 - Full Vacations in the US

Chuck Sat, 2013-08-03 17:00
We can check one off...Lori and I took the California wine country trip this summer. It was an A+ vacation, worthy of several upcoming blogs. So if the long weekend trips are the bread and butter, the vacations are the entre', the main course. We've been fortunate to have been able to take some great vacations, like this past summer's trip to Europe which I blogged about in great detail. But there's always more on the list. Here's my current list of want-to-do's in the USA. California Wine Tasting - a colleague of mine is a great wine lover and goes on a wine tasting and collecting trip every...

Travel Wishlist, Part 2 - Long Weekends in the US

Chuck Fri, 2013-08-02 16:30
Since I originally wrote this blog, we've done exactly 0 of these long weekends. Yet they are still all appealing to me, so my list appears to be enduring! Long weekends and short trips are the bread and butter for us vacation lovers; it's great to plan the big trips for months in advance, but it's also great to take those more frequent, quick, short-notice trips (as in a few weeks to a couple of months in advance). We head to the north Georgia mountains a couple of times a year to enjoy a weekend of solitude, mountain air, and to simply get away from the city. Some of our other recent quick...
