Travel-Work-Play Defined

The Lauterbrunnen Valley, Switzerland
Chuck Tue, 2014-03-25 08:50
The Lauterbrunnen Valley, Switzerland; Looks Like A Great Place to Work to us! Inevitably when we tell people that we're going to be in Europe the second half of the year, they respond with something like, "Wow, what a vacation!" What ensues is often a confusing and awkward explanation that no, we're not going to be on vacation, that we have business there to pursue, that we can work on our business in the US from anywhere, but that we do intend to fully enjoy our freedom. We can best summarize our new lifestyle as Travel-Work-Play . Any two-word combination derived from these three words is...

Disney Memories

Lots of people around the Atlanta area are heading south to Walt Disney World for spring break. We've been an embarrassingly large number of times. Seriously, you wouldn't believe how many times we've been: it's in the dozens, and that's not an exaggeration. But when you have kids, it's definitely a great place to go. This picture was taken on a trip in 1999. Our son is now 25 and soon to be married, and our daughter is 22 and--perhaps not surprisingly--works for Disney. We're pretty certain that A) this was the last time they held hands, and B) Disney World was the only place they ever held...

Ok, one more "parting view" of winter: the covered bridge in Woodstock, Vermont. Some people love lighthouses, we apparently love covered bridges.

Review: TP-Link TL-WR702N Travel-Sized Wireless Router

We've been collecting odds and ends for our travels the last few months, everything from travel sheets for potential hostel visits to cables and adapters for our electronics. We've even turned to the "dark side" and purchased a Mac Book Pro to help consolidate (and shrink the size and weight of) our computing and be completely compatible with our iPhones and iPads: we're like walking Apple advertisements. We even purchased a French press to make coffee in the possibility that we arrive someplace without a coffee maker. Now we're addicted to our French press and it's the only coffee we make...

Vermont: Home Exchange Turned House Sit, Part 2

Covered bridge near Tunbridge, Vermont

We had a great day at Stowe. We're intermediate skiers, and Stowe is chock-full of intermediate (blue) trails. And the trail philosophy at Stowe (versus, say, Killington) seems to be: fewer lifts, longer runs. Which suited us fine. We spent the morning and early afternoon on Gondolier, Perry Merril, and I (Chuck) even dabbled in some moguls on Upper and Lower Switchback. We had a great lunch at the Cliff House: ok, a pretty good lunch (3.5 out of 5 stars) but greatly improved with a spectacular view. Unfortunately we had left the camera and our phones back at the base lodge, so the images of...

"We're in Vermont," we'd sometimes say, and more often than not the response was, "Oh, it's a beautiful state". Indeed. We've been skiing in Vermont numerous times, and once we started thinking of long term travel, spending an entire ski season there jumped to the top of our wish list. We had dreams of skiing so much that we'd need to buy annual lift passes. While it seemed likely we could find someone in Vermont who would love to come south for the entire winter season and exchange homes with us, we had to scale our ambition back simply because we weren't quite ready for such a long term...

Redefining Luxury...To Be A Car That Actually Works

Chuck Wed, 2014-03-12 11:00
My dad always held the belief that a Mercedes Benz was an investment. He believed, in 1983, that if he had only splurged in 1963 to buy that Benz he'd contemplated buying, he'd still be driving it those 20 years later. If only he had made that investment, he could have saved the thousands on all those other cars that he purchased in those 20 years. "It is the world of luxury that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth..." When I bought our Mercedes ML350 a few years ago, I heard the same mythology over and over, that a Mercedes is an investment, that luxury cars are...
