Being A Temporary Regular

Chuck, Renaldo, and Randy at il David, Firenze (Florence, Italy)
Chuck Thu, 2014-05-29 07:30
il David in Florence is our favorite place to eat in this beautiful city. This was our third visit in about as many days, and it's heart-warming to be greeted with a smile and a hug. We look forward to going back! If you're in Florence, don't miss il David's on the south side of Piazza della Signoria. Tell them Chuck and Lori said hi!

Very Cool App: Word Lens

Chuck Wed, 2014-05-28 07:30
We recently downloaded a very cool app worth a blog: it's called Word Lens. Admittedly we only downloaded it because we heard it was (for a limited time only!) free. We like free apps on our iPhones. We don't have a problem paying for an app we want, but free is even better. By the way, we hear it's also now available for Android, and it seems that just over a week ago, Google acquired Quest Visual, the company that publishes Word Lens. That tells you right there it's something worth taking a look at. Good mobile apps do a slick job of solving a typical problem you might encounter anywhere...

What To Do When Something Goes Wrong; Or, How To Survive An Encounter With An Irish Mobster

Chuck Mon, 2014-05-26 00:00
"But we have a reservation," I explained, holding up my itinerary, as if that were proof. He just laughed, shrugged, and said in a thick Irish brogue that was hard to understand, "Yeah someone else showed up asking for a room, and they gave them yours so they could go home. They do that, I know them, I see it all the time." It was the last night of our first trip to Europe. We had just completed a big circular tour, having started in Amsterdam two weeks earlier. We were flying out the next day, and we had hopes for enjoying one last night in the city of canals that we had so enjoyed a few...

What Are We Going to Miss?

Snoopy: I'll miss you!
Chuck Thu, 2014-05-22 08:00
A few days ago we blogged about the things we're looking forward to once we hit the road in June for 6 months of travel in Europe. Today we turn melancholy, and {{snifff-sniff}} list the things we're going to miss (somewhat in increasing order of importance). Wine in the mail : since last year's trips to wine country ( summer and fall ), we--like most people who visit Napa and Sonoma, as we've discovered--wound up with quite a few wine club memberships (we're marked as wine club pushovers apparently). Even beyond the post-tasting euphoria, it's been a lot of fun getting those pseudo-random...

The Museo Galileo in Florence is a great day-long visit with a fantastic collection of early scientific instruments, including these beautiful brass telescopes. The museum's collection includes some telescopes fashioned by Galileo himself.

Sure-Fire Diet: Chuck's Before and After Pictures

Chuck at 265 pounds

Diet blogs are popular. They get lots of traffic, which can only mean there are lots of people surfing the web for ways to lose weight. When I recently reposted my blogs of a few years ago about my "sure fire diet", not only did our blog site traffic go up, but a few of our friends who didn't know me back then asked about my weight loss. Inevitably the conversation leads to me pulling out my "before" picture. Well here's both my before and after pictures, for all of blogosphere posterity. Chuck prior to when the diet began on 1/1/2012 - 265 pounds Chuck by Christmas, 2012 - 185 pounds

What Are We Looking Forward To?

Picture of long and winding road
Chuck Sat, 2014-05-17 08:00
Now that our 30-day countdown has begun (Siri reports only 29 days left to go!) we've been waxing a little poetic about the things we'll miss and the things we're looking forward to. Being the optimists we are, we'll blog today about the things we're looking forward to and save the things we'll miss for another few days from now. So here's what we're most looking forward to when we hit the road on June 15th: Becoming a temporary regular : in previous trips to Europe, the longest we've ever stayed in 1 place is 1 week (Rome, if you're curious). At the time this seemed like an incredibly long...

Gelato in Florence, Italy
Chuck Fri, 2014-05-16 08:25
We like to take pictures of our food. The more colorful the variety, the more tasty the memory, the better. This picture almost makes me smell Italy...

The 1-month countdown begins!

Calendar with days x'd out
Chuck Thu, 2014-05-15 07:30
Today is exactly one month before our adventure begins! On June 15th, we head to London via Orlando. I'd write a more detailed blog, but I suddenly realized how much stuff I need to accomplish today...

Working Should Be About Living, Not Making Money

Guy in cloud of money
Chuck Wed, 2014-05-14 09:00
When we first started researching the long-term travel lifestyle over a year ago, we were surprised at how many books, pundits, and bloggers talked about the philosophies of the lifestyle. It felt at times as if we were indoctrinating ourselves into some sort of cult. Yeah, we "got" that you had to change your lifestyle, that you have to learn to give up some material interests, that you have to live a more lean life. After all, you can't pack it all in a suitcase, can you? But what we've come to learn in addition to the mantra of "live less materialistically", is that working--as in your...
