Dance Across the Atlantic 2017

We’ve wanted to learn ballroom dancing for years. Back when we first got married and there were only 12 channels on cable, we would occasionally come across ballroom dance championships on PBS. We were mesmerized and always wished we could dance like that.

Years—decades—passed, kids came and went to college and moved out, and we finally had our chance. Chuck bought Lori an introductory package of ballroom dance lessons at the local Arthur Murray studio and--having taken lessons from Salem, Oregon to London and Prague--we haven’t stopped dancing since. You might be thinking: I’ve got no rhythm and two left feet, there’s no way I can learn to dance! We can assure you that, with the right instruction, anyone can learn to dance (we are living, dancing, proof).

There are many reasons to learn ballroom dancing, from making great friends to just getting out to learning something together as a couple. But did you know there are concrete health benefits to dancing? Beyond the obvious that dance is a physical activity, there is a strong correlation between dancing and a decrease in memory diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s. And while you’ll gain a confidence, grace, poise, and balance you might not realize you had, the main thing is that you’ll just have fun.

You CAN Learn To Dance! And You Can IMPROVE Your Dance!

So if you’ve always wanted to learn to dance, here’s a great chance to learn. And if you’re already adept on the dance floor, here’s a chance to add some diversity to your dance. Come to London with us for an unforgettable week of dance lessons, then join us on the iconic Queen Mary 2 for a week-long transatlantic crossing where you will put your new ballroom dance skills to use and waltz, foxtrot, and rumba every night away.

Ballroom Dance Guru Len Goodman

Your ballroom dance lessons will be at the Goodman Dance Academy, the private dance studio of none other than ballroom dance legend Len Goodman. You know him as the affable but style-focused judge on Dancing With The Stars and Strictly Come Dancing, and his studio in London suburb Dartford offers beginning to advanced instruction in International style ballroom dance. Your tour package includes 8 private lessons (per couple) and 6 group lessons (beginning and intermediate groups) taught by professional instructors hand-picked by Len. Because Len keeps busy in both the US and UK with his television schedules, there’s no guarantee you’ll meet him, but…you never know!

With a little work and a lot of fun, when it’s time to board the Queen Mary 2 for our ride home, you’ll be dancing with confidence and style!

Our 2017 Dance Across the Atlantic Tour

You’ll arrive in London the morning of Friday, December 8. You’ll find us just as you leave the secure area (we’ll make sure you can’t miss us). From there we’ll whisk you to our hotel in the Southeast London village of Dartford. You’ll have a chance to relax and get over jet lag, but you’ll want to stay awake that evening for our Welcome-to-London party. We’ll be staying at a traditional English inn & pub just a stone’s throw away from the Goodman Dance Academy, so we will toast your arrival with a pint or two and we will plan our week of dancing and exploring London.

Goodman Dance AcademySaturday morning after breakfast you’ll head over to the dance academy for your morning private lesson. We’ll all catch up later in the morning or early afternoon for our beginner or group lessons. Most days will follow this pattern, with two of your days doubling up on private lessons.

Afternoons and evenings you’ll be free to explore Dartford, the surrounding area, or central London. Dartford is a quintessential London suburb with a central pedestrian street of small shops, pubs, and inns. There will likely be a Christmas market going on while we’re there and any number of holiday festivals nearby.

Christmas Market in EnglandIf you crave a Christmasy London (and who wouldn’t?), Dartford’s train station is a short walk away from where we’re staying (don’t miss the plaque commemorating the platform as the place where Mick Jagger and Keith Richards first met) and will whisk you into downtown London in 30 to 40 minutes.

If you prefer to hang out with us, we’ll plan similar area and city outings and excursions, but one night we’ll all go into the city for a show on the West Side (performance to be determined, your tickets are our treat).

On Friday, 12/15, after a week of dance lessons and seeing your favorite London sites, we’ll walk over to the train station and board the Southeastern Line bound for Southampton. We’ll take a transfer from the train station directly to the ocean cruise terminal and board the Queen Mary 2 for the experience of a lifetime.

Queen Mary 2's Grand Atrium at ChristmasStepping aboard the QM2 and into the main atrium may, quite possibly, take your breath away. It’s an understatement to say that this grand Cunard ship will take you back to the bygone era when travel between America and Europe was on grand ocean-going vessels. She is the only passenger cruise ship today built specifically for ocean crossings. She sports the largest ballroom at sea, the largest library at sea, and offers unmatched White Star® service.

Our unforgettable crossing will be the week before Christmas and the Queen Mary 2 will be bedecked from bow to stern in Christmas decorations. You’ll enjoy legendary Cunard meal service (we recommend room service breakfast), traditional holiday meals and treats, Christmas carol sing-alongs, and so much more. Bring your formal attire (tuxes for men, evening gowns for ladies) for 3 formal evenings and your best dinner attire for the remaining evenings. And don’t forget your dance shoes, because the band starts up just after dinner!

Your week on the Atlantic will breeze by seemingly as quickly as taking a jet, and early the morning of Friday, December 22nd, we will glide past the Statue of Liberty on our way to dock in Brooklyn. Over breakfast we will say our goodbyes, and you’ll leave with a lot more than memories: you’ll take your ballroom dancing home with you.
