This is the tomb of Afonso Henriques, who lived from 1095 to 1185. Dubbed “The Conqueror”, he was Portugal’s first king and is buried at the Church of Santa Cruz in Coimbra. His son and Portugal’s second king, Sancho the first, is buried in an equally elaborate tomb on the other side of the altar.
