For the adventurous traveler, tackling the unexpected twists and turns is just part of the fun. The last couple of months have certainly brought their share of twists and turns for us to deal with. If you’d asked us a few months ago what might have derailed our upcoming travel plans, we would have said (perhaps) an amazing can’t-pass-up career opportunity.
Well, one such opportunity seemed to present itself lately and we had to put our vagabonding aspirations on hold while that scenario played out. With a mixture of disappointment and relief we learned that the opportunity is no longer viable. So, this middle-aged empty-nester couple with endless travel aspirations is back to plotting and planning our adventures in 2014.

In the process of improvising and adapting, when the exchange to Miami we were hoping for didn’t go through, we turned to our backup–AirBnB.com–for an alternative. To date the only opportunities we have on the calendar for 2014 are as follows:
- February: Vermont. Up to three weeks in a non-simultaneous home exchange, house- and dog-sitting for a couple who will be headed to Hawaii. They apparently want to get out of the snow and we want to get into it. The only problem is deciding if Lori can yet be away from work that long. We’ll have to decide soon.
- June: Madrid. Three weeks in a simultaneous exchange with a family who wants to bring their boys to the US to practice their English. We’re looking forward to the Travel-Work-Play opportunity where we can enjoy tapas and flamenco and Spanish reds.
- Fall: Portugal. A week or two in a Workaway.info arrangement in exchange for us working on a great-looking little B&B’s website.
Now that the distraction of the unexpected opportunity is behind us, we’ll be improvising and adapting again, focusing again on filling in that calendar and developing our ability to Travel, Work, AND Play.
